    Erik Laxman was a Finn, born in the city of Savonlinna [then Sweden] in 1737. In 1742 Savonlinna became a part of the Russian empire, where Laxman made his career as an appointed professor. He was a naturalist with an interest in botany, geology and zoology. He published some new vascular plant species to science, among others Koelreutria paniculata, Spiraea altaiensis (=Sibiraea laevigata), Robinia spinosissima (=Caragana spinosa). Many of his articles treated practical issues in a Linnaean sense, i.e., based on harnessing nature to benefit mankind. One of the articles, titled On the Russian bobovnik and the oil prepared thereof, is translated here from Russian to Finnish.

    After the budgetary cuts made at the University of Helsinki in 2016, the implications for the Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) were disastrous due to the inadequate leadership, because some heads of the units did not know about or did not want to save what still could be saved in order to help the situation of the dismissed individuals and to ensure their possibilities to carry out their own further research. Two outstanding female bryologists and four other people were dismissed in March 2016 from the Botany unit of LUOMUS, and their access to the bryological collections was hindered for a long time in 2016-2017 under various pretexts. In 2018 the situation of the dismissed bryologists became somewhat better in some respects, but unfortunately they were not allowed to retrieve their keys confiscated during the unfair dismissal process in 2016. The possible return of the confiscated keys would mean very important rehabilitation for the dismissed bryologists. The details of the episodes in the Botany unit of LUOMUS during 2018 are reported now in Finnish, with an English condensation (pp. 6–10).     After the budgetary cuts made by the Finnish government in 2015 the University of Helsinki carried out in 2016 simultaneously several disputable reforms comprising the restructuring and too deep downsizing of the administration, and the implementation of education reform called Big Wheel. The implications in the Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) were even more disastrous due to the inadequate leadership on all levels, because some heads of the units did not know or did not want to save what still could be saved in order to help the situation of the dismissed persons and to assure their possibilities to carry out their own further research. Two outstanding female bryologists and four other people were dismissed in March 2016 from the Botany unit of LUOMUS, and their access to the bryological collections was hindered for a long time under various pretexts. The details of these and some other flaws during the period 2009–2017 are reported now in Finnish, with an English condensation (pp. 14–21) in order to provide a contemporary description and testimony and a possibility for later generations in the history of Finnish botany to judge these events and the leadership shown during this dark period.

    Artikkeli on yleistajuinen esitys "viidennestä sisäilmaepidemiasta" joka on edelleen ratkaisematta ja hoitamatta. Neljä aiempaa sisäilma epidemiaa on jo periatteessa ymmärretty ja saatu ratkaistua: asbesti, radon, formaldehydi ja tupakansavu, jotka on periaatteessa saatu ratkaistua. "Viidennen" epidemian syyt ovat monet erilaiset joiden ratkaisemiseen ei riitä yksi laki tai yksittäinen toimenpide, niinkuin aiempiin riitti. Kyse ei ole "home- ja kosteusvauriosta", vaan paljon moninaisemmasta ilmiöstä: rakennusmateriaaleissa käytetyt kemikaalit biosidiset aineet jotka saattavat ympäröidä ihmistä koko sisätiloissa oloajan ja jotka luovat toksiineja tuottavia homeita suosivan sisätilaympäristön. Homeiden nestemäiset pisaraemissiot, joiden kulkeutumista hengitysilmaan ilmanvaihdon turbulenssi lisää, siivousaineiden sisältämät antimikrobiset biosidit, joiden kuorma nykyisellä siivoustekniikalla ("ei huuhtelua") muodostuu ajan mittaan suureksi. Höyrynpaineeltaan matalat siivous- ja kiinteistön hoitoaineiden tehoaineet eivät haihtumalla poistu. Aerosolisoitumista sisäilmaan tehostaa kostutinkemikaalien käyttö siivoustuotteissa ja maaleissa. Siivouksen ammattituotteet ja myös kuluttajatuotteet sisältävät myrkyllisiä kationisia ja jonittomia tensidejä ja silmiä vammauttavia aineita; kaasumaisten sulfidien kuten rikkivedyn muodostus tuulettumattomiin tiloihin joutuneista, kostuneista kipsimateriaaleista (betoni mukaan lukien).
