We present a measurement of inclusive J/psi production in p-Pb collisions at root S-NN = 5.02 TeV as a function of the centrality of the collision, as estimated from the energy deposited in the Zero Degree Calorimeters. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector down to zero transverse momentum, p(T), in the backward (-4.46 <y(cms) <-2.96) and forward (2.03 <y(cms) <3.53) rapidity intervals in the dimuon decay channel and in the mid-rapidity region (-1.37 <y(cms) <0.43) in the dielectron decay channel. The backward and forward rapidity intervals correspond to the Pb-going and p-going direction, respectively. The p(T)-differential J/psi production cross section at backward and forward rapidity is measured for several centrality classes, together with the corresponding average p(T) and p(T)(2) values. The nuclear modification factor is presented as a function of centrality for the three rapidity intervals, and as a function of p(T) for several centrality classes at backward and forward rapidity. At mid-and forward rapidity, the J/psi yield is suppressed up to 40% compared to that in pp interactions scaled by the number of binary collisions. The degree of suppression increases towards central p-Pb collisions at forward rapidity, and with decreasing p(T) of the J/psi. At backward rapidity, the nuclear modification factor is compatible with unity within the total uncertainties, with an increasing trend from peripheral to central p-Pb collisions.

A search has been performed for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW in 2l2q final states, with two charged leptons (l = e, mu) produced by the decay of a Z boson, and two quarks produced by the decay of a W or Z boson. The analysis is sensitive to resonances with masses in the range from 400 to 4500 GeV. Two categories are defined based on the merged or resolved reconstruction of the hadronically decaying vector boson, optimized for high- and low-mass resonances, respectively. The search is based on data collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). No excess is observed in the data above the standard model background expectation. Upper limits on the production cross section of heavy, narrow spin-1 and spin-2 resonances are derived as a function of the resonance mass, and exclusion limits on the production of W' bosons and bulk graviton particles are calculated in the framework of the heavy vector triplet model and warped extra dimensions, respectively.

Modifications to the distribution of charged particles with respect to high transverse momentum (p(T)) jets passing through a quark-gluon plasma are explored using the CMS detector. Back-to-back dijets are analyzed in lead-lead and proton-proton collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV via correlations of charged particles in bins of relative pseudorapidity and angular distance from the leading and subleading jet axes. In comparing the lead-lead and proton-proton collision results, modifications to the charged-particle relative distance distribution and to the momentum distributions around the jet axis are found to depend on the dijet momentum balance x(j) , which is the ratio between the subleading and leading jet p(T). For events with x(j) approximate to 1, these modifications are observed for both the leading and subleading jets. However, while subleading jets show significant modifications for events with a larger dijet momentum imbalance, much smaller modifications are found for the leading jets in these events.

Modifications of the properties of jets in PbPb collisions, relative to those in pp collisions, are studied at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of,root S-NN = 5.02 TeV via correlations of charged particles with the jet axis in relative pseudorapidity (Delta eta), relative azimuth (Delta phi), and relative angular distance from the jet axis Delta r = root(Delta eta)(2) + (Delta phi)(2). This analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 404 mu b(-1) and 27.4 pb(-1) for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Charged particle number densities, jet fragmentation functions, and jet shapes are presented as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charged-particle track transverse momentum, providing a differential description of jet modifications due to interactions with the quark gluon plasma.

The p(T)-differential production cross section of prompt Lambda(+)(c) charmed baryons was measured with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity. The Lambda(+)(c) and (Lambda) over bar (-)(c) were reconstructed in the hadronic decay modes Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+), Lambda(+)(c)-> pK(S)(0)) and in the semileptonic channel Lambda(+ )(c)-> e(+)nu(e)Lambda (and charge conjugates). The measured values of the Lambda(+)(c)/D-0 ratio, which is sensitive to the c-quark hadronisation mechanism, and in particular to the production of baryons, are presented and are larger than those measured previously in different colliding systems, centre-of-mass energies, rapidity and p(T) intervals, where the Lambda(+)(c) production process may differ. The results are compared with the expectations obtained from perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics calculations and Monte Carlo event generators. Neither perturbative QCD calculations nor Monte Carlo models reproduce the data, indicating that the fragmentation of heavy-flavour baryons is not well understood. The first measurement at the LHC of the Lambda(+)(c) nuclear modification factor, R-ppb, is also presented. The R-ppb is found to be consistent with unity and with that of D mesons within the uncertainties, and consistent with a theoretical calculation that includes cold nuclear matter effects and a calculation that includes charm quark interactions with a deconfined medium.

The measurement of prompt D-meson production as a function of multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at TeV with the ALICE detector at root s(NN) the LHC is reported. D-0, D+ and Dau+ mesons are reconstructed via their hadronic decay channels in the centre-of-mass rapidity range -0.96 <y(cms) <0.04 and transverse momentum interval 1 <p(T) <24 GeV/c. The multiplicity dependence of D-meson production is examined by either comparing yields in p-Pb collisions in different event classes, selected based on the multiplicity of produced particles or zero-degree energy, with those in pp collisions, scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (nuclear modification factor); as well as by evaluating the per-event yields in p-Pb collisions in different multiplicity intervals normalised to the multiplicity-integrated ones (relative yields). The nuclear modification factors for D-0, D+ and D*(+) are consistent with one another. The D-meson nuclear modification factors as a function of the zero-degree energy are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured p(T) regions and event classes. The relative D-meson yields, calculated in various p(T) intervals, increase as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. The results are compared with the equivalent pp measurements at root s = 7 TeV as well as with EPOS 3 calculations.

We report the measurement of a new observable of jet quenching in central Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV, based on the semi-inclusive rate of charged jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high-p T) charged hadron trigger. Jets are measured using collinear-safe jet reconstruction with infrared cutoff for jet constituents of 0.15 GeV, for jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4 and 0.5. Underlying event background is corrected at the event-ensemble level, without imposing bias on the jet population. Recoil jet spectra are reported in the range 20 <p(T,jet)(ch) <100 GeV. Reference distributions for pp collisions at root s = 2.76TeV are calculated using Monte Carlo and NLO pQCD methods, which are validated by comparing with measurements in pp collisions at root s = 7TeV. The recoil jet yield in central Pb-Pb collisions is found to be suppressed relative to that in pp collisions. No significant medium-induced broadening of the intra-jet energy profile is observed within 0.5 radians relative to the recoil jet axis. The angular distribution of the recoil jet yield relative to the trigger axis is found to be similar in central Pb-Pb and pp collisions, with no significant medium-induced acoplanarity observed. Large-angle jet deflection, which may provide a direct probe of the nature of the quasi-particles in hot QCD matter, is explored.

The cross sections for ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) production in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV have been measured using the CMS detector at the LHC. The nuclear modification factors, RAA, derived from the PbPb-to-pp ratio of yields for each state, are studied as functions of meson rapidity and transverse momentum, as well as PbPb collision centrality. The yields of all three states are found to be significantly suppressed, and compatible with a sequential ordering of the suppression, RAA(ϒ(1S)) > RAA(ϒ(2S)) > RAA(ϒ(3S)). The suppression of ϒ(1S) is larger than that seen at √sNN = 2.76 TeV, although the two are compatible within uncertainties. The upper limit on the RAA of ϒ(3S) integrated over pT, rapidity and centrality is 0.096 at 95% confidence level, which is the strongest suppression observed for a quarkonium state in heavy ion collisions to date. © 2019 The Author(s). The transverse momentum (p(T)) spectrum of prompt D-0 mesons and their antiparticles has been measured via the hadronic decay channels D-0 -> K- pi(+) and (D) over bar (0) -> K+ pi(-) in pp and PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the D-0 meson p(T) range of 2-100GeV/c and in the rapidity range of vertical bar y vertical bar < 1. The pp (PbPb) dataset used for this analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.4 pb(-1) (530 mu b(-1)). The measured D-0 meson p(T) spectrum in pp collisions is well described by perturbative QCD calculations. The nuclear modification factor, comparing D-0 meson yields in PbPb and pp collisions, was extracted for both minimum-bias and the 10% most central PbPb interactions. For central events, the D-0 meson yield in the PbPb collisions is suppressed by a factor of 5-6 compared to the pp reference in the p(T) range of 6-10GeV/c. For D-0 mesons in the high-p(T) range of 60-100GeV/c, a significantly smaller suppression is observed. The results are also compared to theoretical calculations. (C) 2018 The Author(s).
