    A loss of biological diversity continues in spite of the existing, and in some respects, rather elaborate and heavy attempts at management and protection. It has been argued that one of the reasons for the lack of success is the unmet and challenging knowledge needs. Meeting the needs requires integration of various sciences and expertise, since attempts to manage biodiversity gives rise also to many emerging, complex and political questions. Integration of the disciplines needs practices that are able to overcome practical, institutional and cultural obstacles. ALTER-Net, a European network for research on biological diversity under the 6th framework programme, has aimed to undertake further interdisciplinary research that will feed into the addressing of societal needs. This report describes how the integration of research progressed and succeeded during the five year life span of ALTER-Net. Initially the integration between disciplines was given as an overall goal, which did result in determining concrete practices of integration between the sciences, teams and partner organisations. The analysis shows that in spite of complications an interdisciplinary research approach can evolve in large research networks, but this can happen also through unanticipated channels. A large network allows room for several parallel processes of integration. The report depicts the development of and choices leading to the development of an interdisciplinary research framework for ALTER-Net, the IDR framework. The framework presents a method to enhance interdisciplinary syntheses of emerging policy-relevant issues and to further develop the identification of relevant topics as interdisciplinary research projects. The IDR framework was tested by focusing on the interlinkages between the bioenergy question and biodiversity. The report consists of a synthesis of pressing research needs pertaining to that topic. The report presents how the IDR framework was constructed using a method that encourages dialogue between the disciplines and different expertise. The method tapped into a cost-effective way to obtain expertise from the European research network and collected a diverse set of research needs and ideas on the topic of bioenergy/biodiversity. Through the method a collection of hundreds of ideas were analysed and synthesised, distilling into four interdisciplinary research plans. The method provided to the end-users of the research findings and other stakeholders a channel for participating in planning of the research. Although the resulting IDR framework was designed to deal with European- wide biodiversity issues, it is applicable for the planning of research in other contexts and on other scales. It can be applied, for example, in designing the research strategy for long-term socio-ecological research platforms (LTSER) or planning research in multidisciplinary research organisations. The framework presented in the report creates possibilities for communication between research and decision-making. By using the framework, relevant topics for discussion are brought up, emerging research needs are reacted to for elaboration into concrete research projects, and finally research findings are conveyed to support decision-making. To achieve this requires organised and open collaboration between research organisations and other stakeholders. The collaboration can be created and enhanced by the tested method presented in this report.

    In this research I'm moving and exploring in a landscape of an inter-disciplinary improvisation performance. The research is structured by choosing one performance which functions as a documented snippet of an ongoing interdisciplinary improvisation practice and is a vehicle to analyse what sort of skills and knowledge enable and are developed in that specific ongoing practice. I map out the validity of those skills and knowledge in relationship to a dancer's know-how in a new paradigm of performing arts, as well as how to facilitate them and what sort of philosophical and ethical notions and issues arise in such a facilitation process. The mode of this thesis is practicebased art-pedagogical research. I'm proposing that the skills and knowledge that enable inter-disciplinary improvisation, and that are simultaneously developed in the practice, are a dancer's self–reflection and decision making process; a dancer's own research and awareness of senses and perceptions; the awareness of interaction of performer(s) and audience during a performance situation and the collaborative approaches towards learning and creating artistic work. These skills and knowledge share similar terrain with the skills and knowledge of a dancer in a new paradigm of performing arts, including the new paradigm of contemporary dance, defined by a performative shift. In addition to these, what can be specifically drawn from inter-disciplinary improvisation practice is a dancer's awareness of her/his inherent concepts that frame her/his perception in working situations, as well as discipline specific inherent working practices and terminology that are taken as a given, yet come up for discussion and reflection through inter-disciplinary work. I'm proposing that these skills and knowledge can be facilitated and developed through dialogical and critical pedagogical approaches that take in consideration notions of freedom, responsibility, artistic ownership, artistic integrity, as well as a notion of wider socio-political landscapes that the work exists in. In terms of practice based working methods that can facilitate this sort of skills and knowledge, there are many routes. One possible way are the inter-disciplinary working methods introduced in this thesis, that emphasize action-research based working cycles, working collaboratively both within a group, as well as in co-facilitating and approaching a facilitation process as a not-yet-known situation. This mode of working approaches a teacher as an active researcher and facilitator, who also engages in a process of self-reflection and dialogue.

    Työn tavoitteena oli muodostaa kokonaiskuva sähköjärjestelmän sisäisistä ja ulkoisista vuorovaikutussuhteista. Sähköntuotantoa tarkasteltiin ympäristöönsä kytkeytyvänä systeeminä tieteidenvälisestä näkökulmasta. Tätä tarkoitusta varten rakennettiin menetelmä laajan kokonaisuuden hahmottamiseksi ja sovellettiin sitä sähköntuotannon alalle. Menetelmäperustuu grounded theoryyn ja systeemiajatteluun: Aineisto kerättiin ja luokiteltiin grounded theorya soveltaen. Systeemiajattelua käytettiin aineiston analyysissä ja aihealuetta kuvaavien mallien luomisessa. Aineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla sähköntuotannon ja -kulutuksen asiantuntijoita. Sen pohjalta rakennettiin useita alamalleja kuvaamaan sähköntuotantokompleksin osajärjestelmiä sekä näitä yhdistävä päämalli. Alamallien aihealueiksi muodostuivat tekninen sähköjärjestelmä, sähköjärjestelmän talous, sähkönsäästö, yhteiskunnallinen vaikuttaminen, ympäristö sekä tuotantorakenteen uusiminen. Lisäksi työssä esitettiin aineistosta nousseita kriteerejä hyvälle sähköjärjestelmälle ja sähköjärjestelmään liittyviä toimijoita. Mallien yhteydessä käsiteltiin myöseri tuotantomuotojen ominaisuuksia. Työn tuloksia tarkasteltiin kriittisesti kirjallisuuden valossa ja arvioitiin luotujen mallien sovellettavuutta. Malleja on mahdollista hyödyntää tieteenalarajoja ylittävän energiatutkimuksen jäsentäjänä sekä arvioitaessa kestävämmän energiapolitiikan edellytyksiä järjestelmätasolla.

    Mistä tahansa asiasta globaalissa kontekstissa puhuminen voi vaikuttaa suuruudenhullulta ja mahdottomalta. Kaikki ihmiskunnan suuret haasteet ovat kuitenkin mitä suurimmassa määrin globaaleja. Vaikka niihin tulee löytää paikallisia ratkaisuja, ilmiöiden ymmärtäminen vaatii laajempaa perspektiiviä, kansainvälistä yhteistyötä ja monitieteistä tutkimusta. Koska uskonto liittyy jollakin tavoin useimpiin yhteiskunnallisiin ongelmiin, kriittiselle, analyyttiselle ja uskontoa monitahoisesti eri kulttuureissa ja yhteiskunnissa tarkastelevalle uskonnontutkimukselle on suuri tarve.
