Goals The purpose of this study was to find out how synchronized skaters are motivated in school PE and synchronized skating practice and do they enjoy attending them. This study also aims to figure out which things are considered positive and which negative among the respondents in the field of school PE and synchronized skating. Former studies show that motivation and enjoyment are related to basic psychological needs: the needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Also goal-orientation theory and TARGET model are used in this study. Methodology A hundred synchronized skaters aged between 11 and 20 from Helsinki and Naantali responded to the questionnaire. This case study was analyzed with mixed methods. The data for this study was gathered with both open questions and Likert scale questionnaire. The open questions were analyzed with qualitative methods and the Likert scale questionnaire with quantitative methods. Results and conclusions This study shows that these athletes are motivated in school PE and even more motivated in synchronized skating. They also enjoy attending both. From the basic psychological needs competence and relatedness were considered most important. In school PE specific sports came up as well as a good teacher and group spirit. All of these came up in both positive and negative way. In synchronized skating the respondents had had the most positive experiences when they were performing well, learning new things, getting the feel of competence and being a part of the team. Most of the negative experiences were among failing in something or not being good enough. The teacher and coach have a big influence on the motivational climate.

Tutkimusaineiston koostuu kahdeksasta Kuala Lumpurissa asuneen suomalaisen naisen teemahaastattelusta. Syynä Malesiassa oleskeluun heillä oli miehiensä työkomennus. Haastattelut on tehty haastateltavien kotona Kuala Lumpurissa. Aineiston analyysi perustuu aineistolähtöiseen sisällönanalyysiin. Lopuksi analysoitu haastatteluaineisto on järjestetty siten, että lukija pystyy seuraamaan empiiristen lukujen myötä suomalaisten puolisoiden lähtöä komennukselle ja kodin pakkaamista, asettumista Kuala Lumpuriin, kodin rakentamista ja arkea siellä sekä lähtöä seuraavaan paikkaa. Tutkimuskysymyksiin vastataan haastateltavien kokemuspuheen kautta. Komennuskoti ja sen paikka arjessa on aiheena yhteiskunnallisesti merkityksellinen ja ajankohtainen. Koti tutkimuskohteena on alkanut kiinnostaa hyvinvointitutkimuksen painottuessa kokemuksellisen hyvinvoinnin tutkimiseen (Vilkko ym. 2010).

The purpose of this study was to describe factors that affect the enjoyment of physical education. It is known that children consider enjoyment being an important part of their physical activity. As an institution that reaches out to all children, school has a significant role to play in the physical activity of children and teenagers, which is why it is important to find out what kind of PE classes pupils enjoy. Earlier studies have shown that PE classes are influenced by, among other things, the content and motivational climate. This study explores and describes factors that, based on pupils' experiences, affect their enjoyment of PE classes. The research was carried out using qualitative methods. 28 pupils from the sixth grade attending the same school in the same class participated in the study. The only criteria for the target group selection was the pupils’ grade. The research material was collected using non-active role play and an open questionnaire. Thematic analysis was performed for the acquired material. On the basis of the results, many different factors contributed to whether or not the pupils experienced enjoyment. Factors contributing to the enjoyment were related to the presence, character and activities of the teacher, as well as pupils' activities, grouping and social relations between pupils. In addition, factors related to PE classes, including content, competition and group size, also affected the pupils’ enjoyment. Finally, under the 'miscellaneous' theme, there were factors that were not related to the issues mentioned above. When all aspects related to these themes were in order, they were seen as factors that make pupils enjoy PE. When aspects related to the same themes appeared the opposite pupils experienced lack of enjoyment. Factors that compromise enjoyment were similar to the top themes described for the factors of enjoyment, except for the "miscellaneous" theme. Finally, in addition to content, competition and group size, factors affecting enjoyment of the theme ”PE classes” included the facilities and experiences of failure. Competition, grouping and group size both contributed and compromised to enjoyment.
