Abstract: According to a common interpretation of Romans 1:20, the order of nature reveals the wisdom, power and existence of the Creator. In the tradition of natural theology, this intuition has also been formulated as an argument known as the design argument. The argument claims that at least some empirical features of the world are best explained by referring to intentional design. David Hume’s critique of the design argument in his Dialogues concerning natural religion in the 18th century has had a large impact on the discussion around the topic. The themes of the modern discussion on design arguments largely follow the Dialogues, though the arguments are today much further developed. In this article, I analyze Hume’s critique of the design argument in the light of the modern discussion.
