Abstract: Several previous studies have noticed that dialectal and multilingual authors have a marked tendency to comment explicitly on the plurality of language varieties present in their works. In Italian fiction these metalinguistic remarks are typically used to frame dialectal elements, but they also appear frequently in other language settings that characterize various minority, post-colonial and migrant literatures. This paper aims to a more systematic reading of these scattered observations with the conviction that a careful analysis of authorial metalanguage can be an important tool in interpreting the motivations behind their language choices. Through narrator’s or characters’ voices authors reveal their language ideologies and those of the society they depict. Examples of two different corpora are discussed: a quantitative analysis of a large electronic corpus of 20th century novels is combined with a more qualitative approach, applied to a selection of contemporary Italian fiction. It appears that metalinguistic comments, alongside the actual heteroglossic elements, are a versatile device in region-making, character construction and composition of the plot. Together with intratextual translations, paratextual and typographical tools (glossaries, footnotes, italics) metalanguage contributes to further highlight the otherness of dialects and flag the contrast to Italian. It seems thus reasonable to consider metalanguage as a noteworthy “side effect” of literary dialect and multilingualism. Furthermore, sometimes the effect of regionality of literary work relies solely on metalanguage; instead of including potentially obscure elements in the text, authors can opt for a more implicit, metalinguistic dialectality simply by stating that something is said in dialect without quoting it.
