Carolyn enters the garage and starts yelling at him, that he is not a good example for their daughter. Considering the ""example-effect"" the audience might consider Lester as a irresponsible person. If the audience see only the film without sounds the judgement should not be that bad. Clip: 62B (Addictions 1)

As Rickie has a catering job, his boss comes out and wants Rickie to come back to work. Rickie just quits, which makes him Lester's hero. After a while Carolyn (Lester's wife) comes out and calls Lester to leave. Lester wants to introduce Rickie, but just starts to laugh without control. This scene looks more like Lester and Rickie having a good time, than two addicts consuming drugs together. On the other side Lester cannot control himself anymore as an effect of the drug. He is driving his car, playing air guitar and smoking some pot. The use of the drug itself would not look that very negative. During that time he is drinking and using cocaine. Discussion: Depending on, if the audience know the following part (the descent) the reaction can be quite different. Without the knowledge the perception will be quite neutral. If the audience knows about the descent, the perception will shift to critical one, as George will drive a pregnant woman to hospital. Moreover he will become a father and should be at least for this moment sober. Clip: 98

George is sitting with some friends around a table. They are celebrating a lucky deal and are consuming cocaine and alcohol. Discussion: The audience will judge these criminals quite hard - they are obviously drug dealers. Another thing is the judgement of the drug consume. It seems not addictive. It is something like the after-hours beer - but the stronger version. Clip: 93

George's girlfriend is puffing during a ""kiss"" the smoke into his mouth. Discussion: The atmosphere is a little bit like sitting around a campfire. The consumption seems not addictive and the persons using the drug are young and pretty people. The combination of a kiss with the consumption of the drug could nevertheless lead to a critical judgement. Clip: 94

Sosiologian laitos; Department of Sociology; Sociologiska institutionen (2008)
Casino (1995, USA) by Martin Scorsese Main Cast: Robert DeNiro; Sharon Stone; Company: Universal Pictures The movie is about the casino boss Sam Rothstein. It plays in the 70s when the gambling business in Las Vegas was mainly controlled by mafia like cartels. The other main protagonist is Nicky, who is a boss of a gang of criminals, robbing and stealing. Another important character is Ginger, Sam’s wife, who becomes an alcoholic. In the end she seeks help from Nicky and also start an intimate relationship with him. The plot could be describe as rise and fall of gangster and casino bosses. Scene: drugs mixed adults adolescent or children hard drugs nontransgressive in company 23:70-24:00: cocaine The marriage of Ginger and Sam is broken. Ginger ran away taking their daughter with her. Sam is then phoning with Lester (to where Ginger ran) and during that time Ginger is preparing some cocaine for her. She does that in front of her daughter, which looks a little bit like preparing something for, or showing something to her daughter. After the call also Lester uses the cocaine. Discussion: Probably there will be an outcry in the group, because a mother is using drugs directly in front of her own child. Clip: 29

Christiane F. (1980, D) by Ulrich Edel The film is about the 14-year-old girl Christiane who lives in Berlin. She hangs around in the club “Studio”, where she also gets drugs. There she also meets Detlev a boy on heroin. After a while Christiane also tries heroin and gets hooked. She tries several times to get clean again, but fails. In the end her mother takes her to small village to get sober again. Scene: heroin female adolescent or children hard drugs in company health problem 09:20-09:70 Before this scene Christiane gives money to friends, that they can buy heroin for them. After having seen Detlev with another girl, Christiane looks for the two friends to get also some of the heroin. The two first refused to give her the drug, but than agree. Christiane then sniffs only the heroin, because she got afraid of the needle, which “Zombie” used in front of her. Shortly before sniffing, C. is looking at “Zombie” out of the corner of her eye. It seems that she wants the others to watch her. All the three are presented a little bit as victims; knowing, that what they are doing is wrong, but still continuing. Clip: 45 (Addictions 5) Notes: PS: 12.8.2007 This is like a DARE drug education film. Chr F has divorced parents, dislikes her mother’s young boy friend, gets mixed up with friends, then wants to use heroine herself, gets hooked right away, go through lots of suffering because of her boy friend is a homo prostitute, gets close to prostitution herself. But together they go through the suffering of the withdrawal and a couple of relapses. Her mother sends her to her grandma, from where her voice quietly speaks and wishes the boy would come clean too. Again the withdrawal scene might be worth testing: do people really believe it is like that? Question to Anja: why do authors agree that withdrawal is not the point about addiction but still they support SUBUTEX?

Killing Zoe (1993, USA) by Roger Avary Main Cast: Eric Stoltz Company: Davis Films Zed, a thief and specialist in opening safes has been invited by his friend Eric to Paris. There they want to rob the Federal Reserve of France. In comparison to Zed, Eric and his gang are very brutal and they do not manage to prevent the alarm. The robbery ends in blood shed. Zoe, who is working at the bank, saved zed. Zoe is also a call girl, who met Zed on one of her “jobs”. Scene: drugs male adults hard drugs solitary 0:55:20-0:55:50: heroin In this scene Eric uses heroin. The scene on its own will be seen as addiction, as an illegal “hard” drug is used. Considering the context the use is even more problematic, as the gang is just robbing the bank and Eric would need his full concentration for the “job”. Insofar, we can see here also an interesting image of breaking the protestant work ethic. Clip: 231

The gang goes to a bar and gets even more intoxicated. In the end Zed can see the music. In this scene the whole group seems to have fun. Although Zed is high and tired, he also joins dancing and enjoys the evening. Only when Eric gives him a pill, he got sick and has to vomit. Here it is difficult to say, if the audience will consider the consumption as addiction. Clip: 230
