She does not intent to play, but Bella Patchet an old lady tells her that the machine is hot. When also Laura’s husband starts to advice her on the game, she begins to gamble. Already the second game she wins 100 Dollar. Laura’s gambling is probably not seen as addiction. She is only a beginner, and has fun when winning. It could be different with Bella, as she uses a card instead of coins for gambling. Clip: 180

She hallucinates, seeing gambling tables instead of normal tables. Here gambling distracts her from, work. Hence also here the conflict of preferences is presented, which is a criterion for addiction. Clip: 187

Honeymoon in Vegas (1992, USA) by Andrew Bergman Main Cast: Nicolas Cage, Sarah Jessica Parker Company: Castle Rock Entertainment Jack looses in a poker game 65000$ he has borrowed from Tommy. As a payment Tommy wants to spend one weekend with Jack’s girl friend Betsy. In the end Betsy and Jack got married, although Tommy has tried everything that Betsy marries him. Scene: gambling male adults cards alcohol in company 0:07:25-0:07:44: gambling In this scene Jack sits together with some friends at home and plays poker. They drink Pepsi and beer and have some crisps on the table. [Strange that the table has a green cover like “professional” gaming tables – after all it is probably the kitchen/eating table in the apartment]. The scene seems like a nice evening between friends and there is no addictive component in the behaviour. Clip: 213

Scene: gambling female adults machines Transgressive 0:13:53-0:14:00: gambling In this short scene Betsy wins at the slot machine. She is very happy. I concluded this scene in the clip archive, because it is the relatively seldom presentation of slot-machines (instead of poker or roulette normally). There is no addictive component in the behaviour. Clip: 214

Scene: gambling male adults cards alcohol tobacco Transgressive in company money problem 0:21:32-0:26:48 (with intermissions): gambling These scenes show the poker game in which Jack looses 65000$. They sit at a stereotypical gaming table. The people around have leisurewear, but otherwise it is a stereotypical portrayal of a poker game: Serious looking men with sunglasses, one with cigar. At first Jack wins and everybody (except the one with highest losses) is happy. Until then there is no addiction portrayed. The situation changes, when Jack starts to lend more and more money to keep up with the raises. He loses and one can see the panic in his face. Clip: 215

House of Games (1987, USA) by David Mamet Main Cast: Lindsay Course Company: MGM The film is about Margaret a successful psychiatrist. She wants to help a client and goes to “house of games” where she nearly gets fooled. She then starts to follow Mike, the leader of a trick gangster gang. They fool her and get about 80000$ from her. In the end she kills Mike for revenge. Scene: gambling male adults cards tobacco Transgressive in company psychological distress 17:16-21:43 In that scene she is assisting Mike to realize when the opponent is bluffing. She is the only woman on the poker table. The place is the typical place for gambling. Only one lamp is lighting the scenery. The table is covered green. Steam is lying in the air. Nearly everybody smokes. After a while Mike is getting very angry at his opponent. Discussion: As this scene is very typical for gambling I would expect, that the reaction will be more negative. They are playing for a lot of money, just for fun. On the other side the scene could also lead to laughter as it is that very typical. Clip: 39 (Addictions 5)
