She coughs at first breath, but continues to smoke. While smoking they chat. This is a stereotypic scene of “man offering woman a cigarette (or drink)” to indicate the start of a deeper relation. Also the missing competence of the innocent child (Grace) is shown, who has not yet the competence to smoke. Clip: 253
  • Platoon
Sosiologian laitos; Department of Sociology; Sociologiska institutionen (2008)
Platoon (1986, USA) by Oliver Stone Main Cast: Charlie Sheen, Willem DaFoe Company: Cinema 86 The movie is about an American platoon in the Vietnam War. The main character is Chris who enlisted himself out of idealistic reasons. The film shows the horrors of war, where oneself and the comrades can become a more dangerous enemy than the VC. Scene: gambling alcohol male adults beer or cider strong tobacco cigarettes in company cards nontransgressive 0:32:44-0:33:57: alcohol/smoking/gambling In this scene Sgt. Barnes and his squad sits together drinking, smoking and playing cards. The platoon’s lieutenant comes around to check his soldiers’ morale. Barnes offers the lieutenant to play, but he refuses. Here drinking, smoking and gambling serves as a kind of group cohesion. Soldiers are together, but the officers, although trying to appear normal and casual still stay outside the group of normal soldiers. Clip: 265 Notes: ME: 2007-08-23: The two parties at base-camp symbolize also the two different squads: Elias’ squad, which does its job at war, but tries to keep up to some values, have a “fun-party”. In comparison Barnes’ squad, just sit, drink, and gamble, showing not much fun while doing this – this squad also commits war crimes.

Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage (2005) by Marc Rothemund The film tells the story of Sophie Scholl one important member of the group “White Rose”, which resisted against the Nazi regime. She got caught while distributing pamphlets and was executed after a show trial. Scene: tobacco mixed adults cigarettes nontransgressive in company 1:45:37-1:47:10 In this scene Christoph Probst, Hans and Sophie Scholl meet for the last time and have their last cigarette before the execution. It is a very quiet moment of solidarity. The cigarette is the medium here to represent their community. Everybody enjoys one breath of cigarette and then they hug. The audience’s reaction to smoking here will be very positive. I would not recommend using the clip in a German interview group as the following discussion will be more about the content of the movie than the smoking. Nevertheless the scene shows the well known image of the last cigarette. Clip: 299
