Calamari Union (1995, FI) by Aki Kaurismäki Main Cast: Kari Väänänen; Pirkka-Pekka Petelius; Company: Villealfa Filmproduction OY A group of man, who are all named Frank, leave towards a better life in Eira. The tough trip starts in Kallio and takes a lot of lives. Scene: tobacco male adults cigarettes alcohol nontransgressive in company 0:34-0:36: tobacco/alcohol The Franks are together with a taxi driver in a bar. The taxi driver first offers them cigarettes and then drinks Clip: 60B (Addictions 1) Notes: PS: 070803: Episodic structure of the film displays different kinds of relationships between youngish adult men on their allegorical journey from Kallio, their childhood area to Eira, a dreamland where the rich live and opportunities are great. Must see the film again for a more detailed analysis of what they seek. Each episode is or includes a paraphrase of a well known movie scene, has lots of references to contemporary Finnish rock music and “underground” culture, and thus this is a film for buffs. Members of the gang die one by one, and the two who reach Eira are disappointed and steal a rowing boat to go the Estonia. The smoking scene now selected for ADDICTIONS 1-2-3-4-5 might imply some sort of male solidarity associated with smoking, especially the scene at the bar with Tuomari Nurmio. For interview vignette this is perhaps also too cryptic, and the same name Frank for all of them is confusing.

Coffee and Cigarettes (2003, USA) by Jim Jarmusch Main Cast: Robert Benigni; Bill Murray; Company: Asmik Ace Entertainment The movie consists of eleven short stories, each involving cigarettes and coffee. In every story coffee stands for solidarity and in each story they chinking coffee cups like one do with alcoholic drinks. Also smoking is despite some conversation about unhealthy smoking depicted very positively and in nearly every story a sign for solidarity. Scene: tobacco male adults cigarettes nontransgressive in company 0:15:34-0:17:15: tobacco There is a pack of cigarettes on Iggy’s and Tom’s table. Iggy says that someone has probably forgotten it there. Then Iggy and Tom discuss that they have stopped smoking and how good it is. Now that they have stopped, Tom concludes they can smoke. Both smoke a cigarette and enjoy it very much. On the one hand, there seem to be a real pleasure by smoking. On the other side, there is also the constrain depicted, as Tom and Iggy smoke, although they both agreed how good it is not to smoke. Hence the audience will see it as loss of control and consequently addiction. Clip: 136

There Dr. William Dedham leads a hospital. He stayed on the island after war and married the princess of the island. But Dedham also has a daughter in Boston and she arrives at the island to meet her father. Between her and Donovan (a friend of William) evolves a love-story. Scene: tobacco male adults cigars, pipes alcohol nontransgressive in company 00:20:44-00:22:16 Donovan his friend Gilhooley and Andre de Lage (the French governor of the island) are sitting together discussing the letter that Dedham’s daughter is coming to the island. The governor is drinking Cognac (suitable drink for his position) compared to Donovan and Gilhooley, who drink beer. Gilhooley smokes. They are discussing serious business and the smoking as well as the drinking seems to be part of that discussion, or makes it look even more important. The situation changes a bit when Donovan breaks a bottle because of Gilhooley’s statement. I do not think that this will be seen as addiction. There are three adult men drinking sensibly and only in the heat of the discussion one breaks a bottle. Clip: 148

In the scene we can see her sadly sitting at her flat, walking around and smoking. Sad music is playing. There is not any talking. Smoking is here presented as something like a friend. It will be seen as addiction – normally someone, who smokes is seeing as addicted. There is no idea of such thing as a social smoker. Clip: 168

Nick has arranged the audition, but Alex wanted to achieve it all by herself. She angrily lightens a cigarette. After some arguing Nick takes the cigarette out of Alex’s mouth saying “You are not old enough for smoking!”. It is an interesting scene in that way that smoking is shown here in context of anger. Normally smoking is shown, when people have a serious talk together or when someone needs to relax or calm down. Problem of the scene is that it is more about the argument than about smoking. Actually the cigarette is only shown three times. Clip: 167
