dc.description.abstract English and Finnish are different in how they encode such syntactic constituents as subject and object. English has no encoding at all. Principally the word order defines whether a word is a subject, object, or indirect object. Finnish uses cases for encoding such differences. The default in Finnish is that the subject is in nominative, the object in accusative or partitive, and the indirect object in allative. There are, however, exceptions to the default encoding.
