Abstrakt: This chapter discusses how typification and individuation of characters operates in different modes of filmmaking and how the basis of this balance can be found in out real world interaction. At one end of the spectrum there is the kind of ideologically based typification that can be found in historical-materialist films made in the Soviet Uninon in the 1920s, at the other films such as VIsconti's The Leopard, which exemplifies George Lukács' notion of type as an individual chow crystallizes the crucial social aspects of a class in a certain historical situation. THe latter serves as an important demonstration of hos typification and individuation are not necessarily diameterically opposite but can work together as a part of our orientation into the real social world as well as its representations in fiction.
