Business ecosystem concept in wooden multi-storey construction projects and potential of buildings as carbon storage

Abstract

Rakennusteollisuuden suuret päästöt, alati nouseva ympäristötietoisuus ja tavoitteet kohti hiilineutraaliutta yhdessä väestönkasvun kanssa ajavat rakennusteollisuutta vääjäämättä keskelle muutosta. Puukerrostalojen on nähty toimivan yhtenä ratkaisuna tämän muutoksen edesauttamiseksi. Puukerrostalohankkeiden ekosysteemiin liittyvillä toimijoilla onkin täten mahdollisuus yhdessä toimien löytää uusia rakennusalan innovaatioita, joilla vastata koko alan kohtaamiin ulkopuolelta tuleviin muutostekijöihin, jotka osaltaan luovat painetta niin sisäisesti kuin ulkoisesti.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli saada parempi käsitys liiketoimintaekosysteemikonseptin soveltuvuudesta puukerrostalohankkeisiin ja miten hanketoiminta tukee ekosysteemin toimintaa. Ensimmäisellä tutkimuskysymyksellä pyrittiin saamaan vastauksia yhteistyöstä ja viestinnästä. Toinen tutkimuskysymys käsitteli puukerrostalohankkeissa mukana olleiden toimijoiden ympäristötietoisuutta. Tutkimus toteutettiin tekemällä 10 teemahaastattelua, jotka liittyivät kolmeen eri puukerrostalokohteeseen, jotka sijaitsivat Suomessa eri paikkakunnilla.

Tutkimuksen tuloksena havaittiin, että näiden kolmen puukerrostalohankkeen liiketoimintaekosysteemit muodostavat useiden eri toimijoiden verkostoja, jotka toimivat ekosysteemin eri tasoilla yhteisenä päämääränään tuottaa laadukasta ja ympäristöystävällistä rakentamista, joka osaltaan lisää maamme hiilivarastojen määrää. Tätä edellyttää toimijoiden välinen yhteistyö, jossa viestintä koettiin pääsääntöisesti sujuvaksi. Toisaalta haasteita oli havaittavissa keskinäisessä kommunikoinnissa ja toimintatapojen yhteensovittamisessa, johtuen työskentelystä uuden asian äärellä. Aikataulutus, tutut toimijat sekä materiaalitoimittaja vaikuttivat positiivisesti hankkeen lopputulokseen.

Hiilijalanjälki ja -kädenjälki laskelmiin toivottiin yhteneväisiä laskentatapoja, jotta vertailtavuus lisääntyisi. Hankkeissa tunnistettiin rakennusten potentiaali hiilivarastona ja puukerrostalohankkeiden ympäristömerkitys nähtiin suurena. Hankkeessa mukana olleet toimijat kokivat, että tarvittaisiin asennemuutosta niin kuluttajien kuin rakennusteollisuuden osalta, jotta puukerrostalohankkeiden määrää saataisiin nostettua. Nähtävissä oli haastateltujen taholta pohdintaa siitä, ovatko yritykset tarpeeksi laajasti omaksuneet ympäristöajattelun ja tullaanko asetettuihin vastuullisuustavoitteisiin pääsemään niin yrityksissä kuin laajemmalti rakennusteollisuuden puolelta. Tästä huolimatta puukerrostalorakentaminen nähtiin positiivisena asiana, jonka myötä on mahdollisuus ottaa askel kohti nykyrakentamista kestävämpää tilaa ja siten olla osana suurempaa, yhteistä muutosta, johon pääseminen edellyttää toimialat ylittävän yhteistyön laajentumista. Tämä kuitenkin vaatisi rakennuskäytäntöjen muuttamista ja rohkeutta tehdä asioita uudella tavalla sekä avoimempaa yhteistyötä eri toimijoiden keskuudessa.

High emissions from the construction industry, ever-increasing environmental awareness, and goals towards carbon neutrality, along with population growth, will inevitably drive the construction industry to change. Wooden multi-storey buildings have been seen as one solution to facilitate this change. Thus, ecosystem actors in wooden multi-storey construction projects could work together to find new innovations in the construction sector to respond to external shifts in the sector as a whole, which contribute to both internal and external pressures.

The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of the applicability of business ecosystem concept in wooden multi-storey projects and how the project activities support ecosystem operations. The first research question sought to get answers about communication and cooperation. Second research question addressed the environmental awareness of the actors involved in wooden multi-storey construction projects. The research was carried out through 10 thematic interviews and involved three different wooden multi-storey projects from three large cities in Finland.

As a result of the research, it was found that the business ecosystems of these three wooden multi-storey construction projects form networks of several different actors. These operate at different ecosystem levels with the common goal of producing high-quality and environmentally friendly construction, which contributes to increasing our country's carbon storages. This requires cooperation between the actors, where communication was generally perceived as smooth. On the other hand, there were challenges in communicating between each other and coordinating different ways of working. This was because these were the first wooden multi-storey construction projects for all parties and thus a new case. Scheduling, familiar actors and wooden elements supplier had a positive effect on the outcome of project.

Consistent calculation methods were desired for the carbon footprint and -handprint to increase comparability. The projects identified the potential of buildings as carbon storage and saw the high environmental significance of wooden multi-storey projects. The actors involved in the projects felt that a change in attitude was needed for both the consumers and construction industry to increase the number of wooden multi-storeys. There was a reflection from the interviewees on whether the companies have embraced environmental thinking widely enough and whether the set responsibility goals will be achieved both within the companies themselves and globally. Nonetheless, the construction of wooden multi-storey buildings was seen as a positive development, providing an opportunity to take a step towards a more sustainable space than modern construction and thus be part of a larger, common change that requires the expansion of cross-sectoral cooperation. However, this would require a change in construction practices and the courage to do things in a new way, as well as more open cooperation between different actors, with clear communication objectives.
