Abstract: In the 2000s, some experts considered the role of the political opposition in Russia to be peripheral at best. However, the rise of opposition politics became one of the most visible effects of the wave of 2011-2012 protests. Why did the Russian opposition reenter the political arena, and which factors contributed to these developments? How did the opposition respond to major challenges and resolve its internal contradictions? And what are the prospects of the political opposition in Russia? This article focuses on these issues and presents an account of the trajectory of opposition politics in Russia and an analysis of its major organizational and strategic problems vis-à-vis the experience of the democratic opposition in various authoritarian regimes across the globe. Special attention is paid to the impact of generational changes among opposition politicians, and to the difficulties of maintaining a “negative consensus” against the status quo regime.
